Re-installing ME the proper way

You will maintain your current settings using this method.

*Notice:  I don't recommend reinstalling Windows ME in normal mode, use Safe mode instead.

Disable any BIOS virus program before you start.
If you have Tweak UI installed, be sure to uncheck "Log on automatically......" on the Logon tab (if you use it).
Disable any and all Norton Products

Next if you have IE6 installed, you need to remove it.

Read the MSKB articles below to remove IE6.

Also you need to remove "Windows Media Player 9" (WMP9), if it is installed. Use "System Restore" to remove it or if that's not possible, then delete the file "C:\Windows\System\wmploc.dll". This prevents the "VERX" error, which will cause the re-install to fail.

Next, In Windows, do a search for BASE2.CAB.

BASE2.CAB is usually found in one of two locations on your hard drive.
"C:\Windows\Options\CABS"
"C:\Windows\Options\Install"

If you find it, boot into Safe Mode
Goto the Folder where you found BASE2.CAB and double-click on SETUP.EXE, or do it from DOS.

Bootup using your "Windows Startup Disk".
Select Minimal (Option 4)
At the DOS prompt, type the following lines and press [Enter] after each.

    C:
    CD [Path]
    SETUP
[Path] = the path where you found the BASE2.CAB. such as C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\INSTALL

Use the following method below only if you have too.
It may cause you to download more WindowsUpdates than the methods above. Or if you have a Restore disk only, then you may lose everything. If you have the WinME CD, then you can reinstall Windows in DOS by going to your CDROM,and running SETUP.
Bootup using your "Windows Startup Disk",Select option 1 (Help)

After the reinstall, go to the "Windows Update Setup Files" folder (If you have one) and run its IE setup program. And then go online to "Windows Update" site, and get all the other updates you need.
