Windows is slow to open folders

Symptoms:
When you open a folder in Microsoft Explorer on a drive using the FAT32 file system, one or both of the following symptoms may occur:

  • It may seem to take an unusually long time before the window is accessible.
  • The Working in Background pointer may appear for a long time.

CausC:
The total space used by all directory entries in the folder exceeds 32K. Microsoft Explorer parses the directory entries in the FAT completely before displaying the files.

Resolution:
To resolve this issue, move some files to a different folder. Try not to set too many folder levels, that is, Folder in Folder in Folder in Folder...etc.
